That Number Company

Google. The number that became a company, that became a search engine, that became the best search engine on the internet, that became the definition of search, that is in the business of knowing you. And it’s putting every effort in getting to know you and your habits.

A few people I talked to (read: non-geeks) don’t know that google comes from googol, which is 10 to the power of 100, or 1 followed by 100 zeroes. And the name of its headquarters, the Googleplex, is yet another number, the googolplex, which is 10 to the power of 1 googol, or 1 followed by a googol zeroes. This number is so large that it cannot be written in the observable universe, nor can the time be taken to do so.

I was always amazed at what Google gave away for free. And since everything is online, it doesn’t matter which machine you use. All your stuff will always be there, as and when you want it. I use Google Search a million times a day, Google Reader as my one stop page for the web, Google Mail as my primary email, Google Maps as a convenient mapping solution and have all my domains tied to Google Apps. At the beginning of this year, I’ve added Google Ads on this webpage. I’m very tempted to use Google’s DNS service.

Using those services, Google knows what I search for on the web. It has the feeds of all the websites I regularly read. It knows the kind of email I send and receive. It knows where I like to go and what landmarks I like to visit. It knows the type of content I have on this blog. If I use its DNS service, it knows which site I usually visit.

Google uses all this information to build a very good profile about me. It knows exactly what ads to show me. Which gives it extremely good leverage to negotiate for advertisements. Which accounts for almost all of its revenue. Rinse and repeat.

Yup, “free” isn’t really free. There is always a price. Goodbye privacy. It’s been nice knowing you.

District 9 Preview

I’m quite excited about the upcoming movie District 9. I hope that it shows actual emotion, rather than the basic whizz-bang-kapow alien movies we are so used to. And for once, extra-terrestrial creatures did NOT land in the US.

The movie is apparently to be inspired by this short.

Seems nice! Looking forward to the movie version.

Ah those 8-bit glory days. How I miss thee. Now re-imagined with Lego.

On a side note, I’ve always wished to have a Lego workspace. I wouldn’t mind dedicating a corner in my new house to Lego. Have a Lego cupboard with multiple drawers where I would store all the different sized Lego pieces. Try out some stop-motion animation. Or get Lego Robotics.

Just another part of my geek dream house.

Freaky PS3 Commercials (And Other Stuff)

Maybe this is why the PS3 isn’t selling as well as other consoles. Sony can’t make a commercial to save its own ass.

Ok, maybe I get the part where twiddling the sixaxis controller would move the eggs. But transforming them into crows when they smash against the wall ups the creepy factor by 10:

I hate dolls that looks remotely anything like an infant. Those lifeless eyes stare right into your soul, as their unwavering smile plastered on their face mocks your very existence.

Which Sony marketing guru approved these ads anyway? Now I’m scared that when I do get my PS3, I won’t be able to sleep very well…
